What is the Fractional CO2 Laser Before and After?
The CO2 Laser is considered the gold standard treatment in dermatology for various skin issues such as: acne scars, stretch marks, melasma, skin laxity, and rejuvenation.
Dr. Szerman explains the Fractional CO2 Laser Before and After:
How does it work?
The CO2 Laser emits light beams that generate controlled heat waves, which penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and rejuvenating the skin without causing burns.
As a result, the patient achieves beautiful and healthy skin through a safe and more comfortable treatment.

The principle of the Fractional LASER is the creation of “thermal columns” (microthermal zones) of energy that penetrate the skin, leaving unaffected areas of skin between these columns, allowing for faster healing from the intact healthy skin and consequently a safer and better recovery of the treated skin.
In the CO2 Deka LASER (fractionated + pulsed), the light is absorbed by water, which transforms into thermal energy with the heating and boiling of intracellular and extracellular fluids. There is an increase in intracellular pressure from the vapors and consequently cellular rupture. The SmartStack function emits a sequence of successive pulses (from 1 to 5) at the same point (DOT) and was developed to precisely control the depth of vaporization and thermal (heat) action on the skin being treated in a safe and effective manner.
What is the difference between CO2 Laser and Fractional CO2 Laser?
There are different types of lasers available on the market, with the most common being the fractional CO2 laser and the fractional and pulsed CO2 laser. But what is the difference?
In general, the main difference is that the first one treats the skin through its thermal effect without burning the skin. In contrast, the purely fractional CO2 Laser treats the skin by damaging the skin’s surface, causing burns that delay the recovery process.
4 Advantages of CO2 Laser
Therefore, the main benefits of the Pulsed Laser are:
1- More effective (comparative studies and practice demonstrate these results)
2- Less pain (patients who have experienced both types of lasers report incomparable discomfort)
3- Safer (less aggression to the epidermis, as it is deeper and works through heat)
4- Faster recovery (on average, 4 to 7 days)
Most patients return to their activities the day after the procedure (only a few need more days).
Are there contraindications for Fractional CO2 Laser?
Fractional CO2 Laser is a well-accepted procedure for most patients. However, there are situations where this treatment is not recommended. People with skin infections, vitiligo, lupus, and other photosensitive diseases should not undergo this procedure. The same contraindication applies to those taking photosensitizing medications, oral anticoagulants, as well as people with a tendency for scarring.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also not undergo this treatment while in this condition.
How many CO2 laser sessions are needed?
In general, the number of Fractional CO2 Laser sessions will depend on the indication, power used, the area to be treated, among other details. On average, we recommend 4 to 6 sessions to achieve great results. However, the best approach is always to have an evaluation consultation with a dermatologist. This professional can assess your case and determine the ideal number of Fractional CO2 Laser sessions to address your issue.

FAQ
How long does the effect of Fractional Laser last?
Generally, more superficial applications result in complete recovery within a few days. Deeper applications, on the other hand, may require more time for the skin to fully recover. However, this is just an average estimate, especially since the recovery time can vary depending on the technology used, power, and indication.
What are the risks of CO2 laser before and after?
Fractional CO2 Laser treatments offer satisfactory results for different indications. Additionally, it is a safe procedure that provides greater comfort for the patient. However, since the skin tends to be more sensitive right after the procedure, there is a risk of infection if the patient does not follow the dermatologist’s recommendations.
Is there an ideal time to undergo the procedure?
In general, the CO2 Laser procedure can be done at any time of the year. However, the best time is during winter, when there is less exposure to sunlight.
Does Fractional CO2 Laser hurt?
The application of Fractional CO2 Laser does not cause discomfort to the patient. To maximize comfort, a topical anesthetic is also applied to the area receiving treatment.
How much does a session of Fractional CO2 Laser cost?
The cost of a session of Fractional CO2 Laser can vary greatly depending on the clinic, the region, and the area being treated. On average, the cost of a session in Brazil ranges from R$ 500 to R$ 2,500.
Factors such as the clinic’s reputation, the professional’s experience, the number of sessions required, and the size of the area to be treated all influence the price. It is important to consult a trusted clinic and have an evaluation with the dermatologist to understand the recommended number of sessions and the total cost of the treatment.
