Men and women have been looking for alternatives to cosmetic and other facial rejuvenation surgeries.
Filling and harmonization are considered one of the most current and sought after procedures in clinics. With the right approach, they can be powerful allies in your quest for youthful and healthy-looking skin. Do you know how they work? Find out here.
Hyaluronic acid filling is the most common dermatological procedure for restoring face volume.
For many years, this technique was only used to fill marionette lines, smile lines (nasolabial folds), and deep dark circles. Using tomography and MRI, modern medicine has recently discovered that the middle third of the face (cheekbones and cheeks) is the most affected by aging signs and experiences the most significant loss of bone, muscle, and fat, resulting in hollow areas and depressions in a large portion of the face.
“As we age, our ligaments lose strength and the face volume decreases. The loss of muscle tone and thinning skin gives the face a flabby or drooping appearance. Modern studies have shown that smile lines and marionette lines are just the tip of the iceberg of a changing face and should not be treated in isolation,” says Dr. Guilherme Szerman of the Clinica de Pele.
Filling is a cosmetic procedure that restores lost volume to the face in a natural-looking way. For example, a person may receive dermal filler injections in their cheeks to enhance their cheekbones and restore a youthful, plump appearance. The filler can also be used to smooth out lines and wrinkles around the mouth and nose.
The face is mapped to identify areas that have lost volume, and then hyaluronic acid is applied to specific points of the face with the goal of providing support, shaping, and restoring the lost contour.
This technique, which maps the points on the face, is known as MD CODES and was developed by Brazilian plastic surgeon Maurcio de Maio in 2010.

The MD codes™ lift, also known as the 8 point lift, is a non-surgical face lift technique that uses dermal fillers to naturally lift and structure the face.
With that in mind, we use hyaluronic acid fillers and facial harmonization procedures, always taking into account the unique shape and characteristics of each face.
For example, the MD Codes points on the sides of the face can make the face thinner and more V-shaped (a technique known as the “top model look”), which is a desirable feminine shape feature. Whereas in men, they can make the face and chin more square (a shape feature typically perceived as masculine).

The full facial harmonization procedure with the MD CODES technique is planned during the consultation between the patient and the dermatologist to identify the specific points that will be targeted with the filler injections. In addition to discussing the patient’s aesthetic goals and true needs, the consultation also includes a thorough evaluation of their health history. Finally, the dermatologist will provide detailed instructions for pre and post-procedure care to optimize healing and minimize any potential side effects.
Any existing infection on the skin should be treated before undergoing any filling procedure. If a patient has had any recent health problems, such as a fever or infection, it is advisable to wait at least 15 days before undergoing the procedure.
Similarly, the patient should avoid invasive dental procedures the day before and after the session. The procedure is not recommended for pregnant women.
One of the main benefits of this technique, which has revolutionized aesthetic medicine procedures, is that it provides immediate results without the need for invasive surgery.
“The significant advantages of the filler (MD Codes) have earned it the moniker “liquid plastic” or “modern plastic” by the technique’s surgeon and inventor, Dr. Mauricio de Maio. The filler allows for a safe and reversible restoration of patients’ face volume and shape, making it a popular choice among those seeking non-surgical facial rejuvenation,” says Dr. Guilherme Szerman.
Additionally, the final result can be gradually adjusted, so as not to look artificial. The amount of hyaluronic acid used in the sessions may vary depending on the results.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in all animals, including humans.
This sugar molecule attracts water, which helps to keep our joints lubricated and acts as a shock absorber during movement. It is also responsible for fixing water in the skin, which is why it plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of our skin and joints.
The skin contains 56% of our body’s hyaluronic acid, which fills the space between cells and keeps it smooth, elastic, and hydrated. However, its concentration in the skin decreases over time, causing wrinkles and dry skin.
This substance can be applied on the upper, middle and lower part of the face. It also has different densities, which promotes a longer or shorter duration depending on the material used.
“The duration of a good filler’s effect is a crucial factor to consider when choosing the right treatment for your skin. The degree of reticulation, or strength, of the filler plays a significant role in determining how long it will last. Additionally, the technique used during application can also impact its longevity. Hyaluronic acid fillers are particularly effective because they stimulate the production of the same substance by our own organism. This natural process helps to prolong the effect of the filler and maintain its results for longer periods. However, it’s important to note that individual results may vary depending on factors such as age, skin type, and lifestyle habits,” adds Dr. Guilherme Szerman.
While hyaluronic acid can be used to treat the face’s middle layer, such as smile lines, the results are only temporary, lasting between one and two years. This is due to the fact that the hyaluronic acid used is less dense than other materials used for facial support.

Facial harmonization offers a range of benefits to both men and women. One of the most significant benefits of facial harmonization is the boost in self-confidence and self-esteem that it can provide. Some of the main benefits of the procedure are listed below.
Facial harmonization is a popular cosmetic procedure that seeks to improve the symmetry and overall appearance of the face, thus enhancing the natural beauty of the individual.
It slows down the aging process
One benefit of facial harmonization is that it slows down the aging process by reinforcing face cells and firming skin. This helps prevent cellular aging.
Facial harmonization is a procedure that is minimally invasive, involving low to zero recovery time due to the absence of incisions. Consequently, its effects are visible promptly and recovery is expedited compared to other procedures.
It boosts self-esteem
One of the primary benefits of facial harmonization is a boost in self-esteem. Improving facial symmetry and balance can lead to increased self-confidence and improved relationships, both personally and professionally. Incorporating this into skincare routines can improve overall attractiveness.
In terms of the procedure, facial harmonization can serve the following purposes:
Patients usually tolerate the treatment well. As a rule of thumb, patients who are already used to botulinum toxin injections (which are mildly painful) will likely find fillers less painful, especially these modern fillers that contain anesthetics. Unlike other fillers on the market that do not contain anesthetics, these anesthetics can significantly reduce discomfort during the injection process, making the experience much more comfortable for patients.
Besides that, the use of a local anesthetic cream prior to application is a common practice in many procedures. This cream numbs the area, making the procedure much more comfortable for patients.
Hyaluronic acid fillers, in addition to restoring lost volume in certain areas of the face, promotes intense hydration of the skin. When done correctly, facial harmonization produce a natural result that boosts the self-esteem of many patients. As a result, it is one of the most recommended procedures in facial rejuvenation, both for its effective and safe technique as well as its results.
It is important to choose an experienced and qualified practitioner with access to a certified product, who can provide you with personalized treatment that meets your unique needs and goals. Additionally, hygiene conditions must be strictly adhered to in order to prevent any potential complications or infections.
As a patient, it is crucial to inquire about the product brand and exact quantity of materials that will be used in your procedure. This information can help you make informed decisions about your health and safety.
I often compare filling to painting a picture, with the doctor as the artist, the materials used as “paint,” and the patient as a unique canvas. By doing so, I am able to select the right tools and achieve natural and satisfactory results. It is critical to carefully select the appropriate filler density and quantity for each patient’s specific needs. The injection process must also be precise, targeting specific areas of the face to enhance volume and contouring,” explains Dr. Guilherme Szerman.

What is the best filler for the face?
Hyaluronic acid fillers with MD codes™ lift, AKA Medical Codes, is a technique based on the principle that the face must be treated as a whole in a balanced manner, and the 8 Point Lift is an excellent example of this approach. We use hyaluronic acid fillers in facial harmonization procedures to naturally lift and restore facial volume lost with age.
The dermal filling is made of hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring element found in all animals, including humans. It is in charge of fixing water in the skin, which is why it is so important for health. By strategically placing hyaluronic acid fillers in eight key areas of the face, this approach can restore volume and lift sagging skin without surgery. What position should I sleep in after a filling procedure?
It is recommended that you avoid putting pressure on the area of the filled site, which means choosing to sleep on the side. However, the best way to prevent any marks or indentations from forming on your face while you sleep is to sleep on your back.
