Does Hyperhidrosis Have a Treatment? How Does It Work? Find Out!

Hyperhidrosis

Hi, I’m Dr. Guilherme Szerman, and today we’re going to talk about a common question among those who suffer from excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. So, does hyperhidrosis have a treatment?

Hyperhidrosis typically occurs in areas such as the armpits, groin, palms, and feet. In the past, the only treatment option was surgery, called sympathectomy. Nowadays, we have the application of botulinum toxin, a globally performed and very safe procedure. When done by a specialized professional, the results are quite satisfactory.

How does hyperhidrosis treatment work?

Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signal that stimulates the sweat gland to produce excess sweat. It does not alter or damage the gland or the production of sweat itself. The effect is temporary, lasting about six to eight months, and patients experience significant relief during this period.

Is excessive sweating caused by genetics?

It’s important to note that today there is a growing belief that hyperhidrosis is linked to a genetic alteration. Many people wonder whether excessive sweating is related to stress or anxiety.

Of course, anxiety or stressful situations can worsen the symptoms. But there is a clear tendency to think of genetic factors—especially because hyperhidrosis often affects young children and runs in families.

So, patients often feel insecure, thinking they sweat excessively because they’re nervous or anxious. In reality, it’s a genetic condition that, today, can be controlled with botulinum toxin—unlike the old treatment option, which involved surgery.

Is botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis permanent?

Although botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis, its effects are temporary and require periodic reapplication. For those seeking a permanent solution, surgery remains the most long-lasting option. However, this procedure carries greater risks and should be thoroughly discussed with a specialized professional.

Surgery for hyperhidrosis typically involves a clavicular access point. In contrast, the application of botulinum toxin is a simple and easy procedure. At our clinic, we perform this treatment with safe and highly satisfactory results.

It’s not a permanent solution like surgery, but the effects last for 6 to 8 months. Patients can repeat the procedure as needed to maintain the results. And most patients leave the office extremely satisfied.
