Hello, today we’re going to talk about aging and rejuvenation. Did you know that skin aging starts around the age of 25?
This is a process that can bring aesthetic consequences with a negative impact on self-esteem. Many people experience psychological and social issues associated with insecurity due to the appearance of aging skin.
Aging and Rejuvenation – Which area of the face is the most concerning?
The area that tends to cause the most discomfort is usually the face, since it’s the most visible. There are basically two components of aging:
Intrinsic factor
Intrinsic or chronological aging is natural and linked to genetics. Regardless of our actions, the skin, like other tissues, will age.
Over the years, collagen and elastin production decreases. These are responsible for skin firmness and elasticity, and their decline makes the skin thinner and looser. Combined with repeated facial muscle contractions, this leads to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, which tend to deepen over time.
Extrinsic factor
Extrinsic aging is related to multiple environmental factors. The most well-known is photoaging, caused by chronic exposure to UV radiation.
Other factors include smoking, diet—especially sugar, which is particularly harmful to the skin—alcohol consumption, stress, among others.
In these cases, oxidative stress increases, breaking down collagen fibers. The skin loses firmness, becomes rougher and thicker, and develops spots and wrinkles that worsen over time.
According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology, we receive 80% of all lifetime sun exposure before the age of 18, and its consequences are felt years later.
Aging and Rejuvenation – How to slow down skin aging
Given these causes, it is extremely important to control environmental factors through consistent use of sunscreen and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
When it comes to treatment, there are several effective dermatological procedures to prevent and combat skin aging. Among them are: fractional CO2 laser, intense pulsed light (IPL), chemical peels, Botox, and fillers.
