Hello, I’m Dr. Szermer, and today we’re going to talk about a very common question in our clinic: How long does laser hair removal last?
Studies and data published by dermatology clinics indicate that laser hair removal can provide permanent reduction of up to 80% to 90% of hair after completing a full treatment protocol, which usually ranges from 6 to 10 sessions, depending on the treated area, hair type, and skin phototype. In addition, research shows that about 70% of patients report a significant reduction in hair growth as early as the third session, with progressive and long-lasting results when periodic maintenance sessions, usually annual, are performed.
So, how long does laser hair removal last?
Many people ask how long does laser hair removal lasts. To understand this, it is first important to understand some key aspects. Among them, we can mention:
The body’s behavior throughout life and the dynamics of hair production
Hair develops from hair follicles through a growth process originating in the germinative cells of the hair bulb.
Genetic and hormonal factors are the main determinants of each person’s hair characteristics. Throughout life, these and other factors will influence hair production in each individual.
When we talk about eliminating hair with laser hair removal, we are referring to the hair that exists at the time of treatment. In general, people have their highest hair production from adolescence through young adulthood.
However, this is very individual and depends on the characteristics mentioned above. Therefore, one person may stop producing new hair earlier than others and may not need additional sessions.
In this way, some people may complete a treatment and later require touch-up sessions due to hair that may be produced afterward. There is no definitive way to predict whether this will happen or to determine exactly how long laser hair removal will last.
That said, in general, the vast majority of people undergo a single full treatment and do not require further sessions. Patients with hormonal disorders, in addition to laser hair removal to control hair quantity, should seek follow-up care with an endocrinologist or gynecologist.
Laser hair removal treatments
In addition to understanding hair growth dynamics to know how long laser hair removal lasts, it’s important to know which treatments are truly effective and safe for hair elimination.
Seeking an experienced physician who works with state-of-the-art equipment makes all the difference. In this regard, we work with LightSheer, which is considered the gold standard in treatment.
Many patients who undergo treatment tell us that they regret not having done it sooner. Regardless of whether a patient has a higher or lower chance of needing touch-up sessions, the results and benefits are very rewarding and make it worthwhile to start treatment as soon as possible.
Post–laser hair removal care for the bikini area and other regions
After laser hair removal in the bikini area or any other part of the body, some precautions are essential to ensure treatment effectiveness and avoid irritation.
Use sunscreen
Avoid sun exposure to the treated area for at least 7 days, always using sunscreen if exposure is unavoidable.
Avoid tight clothing
For the first 48 hours, avoid tight clothing, hot baths, saunas, and activities that cause friction. Do not use cosmetics containing alcohol or acids on the treated area.
Keep the skin hydrated
Moisturizing the skin with soothing products, such as those containing aloe vera, helps with recovery.
If redness or swelling occurs, cold compresses may help relieve symptoms. And remember: always follow the guidance of the responsible professional.
