What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal is a procedure aimed at progressively removing hair from the treated area.
To do this, the dermatologist uses a laser that emits a light beam with a specific wavelength, causing thermal damage to the hair structure. This way, the effect of the laser slows down or even prevents the growth of new hairs.
Why choose laser hair removal today?
Many women and men prefer smooth, hair-free skin and turn to such procedures.
However, traditional methods often do not deliver the desired results. Examples include:
- Waxing
- Razors
- Threading
- Hair removal creams
All of these methods can cause skin damage, such as the formation of spots, scars, darkening, sagging, allergies, cuts, etc.
Another point to consider is the short time interval between hair removal sessions, as traditional methods “cut” the hair rather than remove it from the root. Hair regrows in about 3 days. Laser hair removal is a modern method, and it’s one of the most recommended for those bothered by unwanted hair.
Among the most recommended hair removal treatments, laser stands out as the most effective. Just a few sessions and you’ll be free of hair, while also having smoother, more beautiful skin.
How do permanent laser hair removal treatments work?
Laser hair removal works through cauterization. In other words, it cauterizes the hair from the root, damaging the hair bulb so that the hair no longer grows.
In other words, it’s as if the hair acts like a fuse in gunpowder. The laser is attracted to the pigment in the hair, traveling through the melanin and cauterizing the root.
In which areas is laser hair removal recommended and why?
Laser hair removal significantly eliminates unwanted hair in areas such as the upper lip, face, armpits, legs, thighs, chest, back, beard, bikini line, and more. This is considered a permanent hair removal solution.
However, the results are better when the skin is lighter and the hair is darker, as there must be a contrast between the skin and the hair for the laser to work efficiently. For example, laser hair removal on the bikini or intimate area is one of the most commonly treated areas, and the results are remarkable. The patient can choose to treat the sides or the full bikini area.
Do men also undergo laser hair removal?
Absolutely. For quite some time, about 35% of our patients seeking this treatment have been men. Among the most commonly treated areas for men are the beard, chest, abdomen, back, and shoulders.
Due to hormonal differences, men typically need slightly more sessions than women.
Folliculitis is a common issue for this group. However, it is important to highlight that the aesthetic benefits and the convenience the treatment provides in daily life are key factors for those who are bothered by excessive hair. For instance, people who need to shave their beard every day find this problem quite common.
What is the best method for laser hair removal?
There are several brands and types of equipment used for laser hair removal. However, the LightSheer Diode Laser is undoubtedly considered the gold standard for this treatment.
The LightSheer Diode Laser is approved by ANVISA (Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency) and offers safe and highly effective hair removal for patients. This equipment, in addition to having a very specific wavelength for more efficient energy absorption by the hair, also features a cooling system on the tip, which ensures safety during the procedure.
Most of the devices used are Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). We can also find other types of lasers, such as Soprano and Alexandrite lasers, among others. There are even portable laser hair removal devices available. However, it is crucial to research the differences in efficiency and safety between the LightSheer and other equipment.

What are the advantages of LightSheer and what does the laser hair removal treatment cover?
Among the advantages offered by the LightSheer Diode Laser are:
- Significantly reduces hair while protecting the skin’s integrity more efficiently during the laser hair removal process.
- LightSheer uses a concentrated beam of light that targets the melanin in the hair. This means it primarily affects the hair and its follicle, protecting the skin from the released energy. The equipment used in laser hair removal has a cooled tip, which helps with the process.
- As a result, it is possible to avoid skin discoloration that may be caused by other types of treatments.
How long does the result last after laser hair removal?
The results of any laser treatment depend on three main factors: the doctor, the equipment, and the patient’s characteristics.
As mentioned earlier, if the treatment is performed by a doctor using state-of-the-art equipment, we can expect a significant reduction in hair, and this result will last according to the genetic and hormonal characteristics of each individual.
The majority of people require only one treatment.
What is the ideal hair length for a laser hair removal session?
The hair should be shaved or short, up to 2mm in length, for the session. Each time the patient returns for a session, they should ensure the hair is at the appropriate length.
Is it more comfortable compared to other hair removal equipment?
Although the pain sensation varies from person to person, one thing is certain: the procedure with LightSheer is the most comfortable. This is mainly due to the device’s cooled tip, which cools the skin immediately after the laser is fired, reducing discomfort.
Safer for hair removal
Since the LightSheer Diode Laser works directly on the hair follicle, its direct effects on the skin are minimized. In other words, with this procedure, you can reduce the amount of hair without harming the skin, ensuring a higher level of safety compared to other hair removal techniques.
Laser Hair Removal: How much does permanent treatment cost?
Many people ask if laser hair removal is expensive. When considering long-term costs of razors, shaving creams, wax, threading, and other methods, it’s well worth investing in the treatment.
There are additional costs to consider, such as whether you are receiving treatment from a professional or using just any laser equipment. It’s often true that the saying “you get what you pay for” applies.
Generally, the prices vary depending on the area where the procedure is performed. For example, the cost of laser hair removal on the face is more affordable than on the legs.
As each case will require a specific number of sessions, the total cost of the treatment will also depend on the average number of sessions required.
That’s why, first and foremost, you should consult with a specialist. They will recommend the treatment and the number of sessions necessary for your specific case.
Remember to consult a doctor to ensure the treatment is safe and effective. Also, inquire about the type of equipment used.

How many sessions are needed for laser hair removal?
The average number of recommended laser hair removal sessions is between 6 and 10 sessions. However, individual factors can influence the number of sessions. For example, male laser hair removal typically requires more sessions than female laser hair removal.
It is important to note that each case must be evaluated, as this is both an aesthetic and dermatological treatment. The doctor will assess the skin and hair characteristics, as well as other factors that affect the final result.
Therefore, the number of sessions required will vary for each person. The patient should attend the sessions with the hair shaved and adhere to the scheduled return appointments.
An interval between sessions is essential so that all hair follicles can be targeted, ensuring effective hair removal. This interval is typically one month.

What is the post-treatment like?
It is common for the skin to be slightly red after Laser Hair Removal. Although the irritation subsides quickly, certain precautions are recommended after the treatment. Ideally, sun exposure should be avoided as much as possible. Additionally, the use of soothing lotions and sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 may also be recommended.
Important recommendations before, during, and after Laser Hair Removal
Before the procedure, we recommend that the patient avoid prolonged sun exposure and keep their skin hydrated: drink plenty of water and use moisturizing creams, for example. Also, avoid using certain acids in the area where the Laser will be applied.
Many patients ask if Laser Hair Removal hurts or carries risks. The Laser is very well tolerated, and for more sensitive patients, a topical anesthetic cream is prescribed 1 hour before the session.
During the treatment, no procedures that remove hair by the root should be performed (e.g., no waxing or tweezing). However, shaving, depilatory cream, or bleaching can be used.
During treatment, it is important to avoid excessive sun exposure and use only products recommended by the doctor to prevent potential adverse effects.
FAQ
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Laser Hair Removal treatment:
Is Laser Hair Removal permanent?
Laser Hair Removal is only permanent when it targets the hair in the correct growth phase and damages the follicle through thermal action. However, it is important to note that the body is very dynamic, and individual factors can affect the results or the growth of new hair. The primary goal is a significant reduction in hair, and it is the treatment of choice for Folliculitis.
Does Laser Hair Removal hurt?
The procedure is generally very well tolerated. The use of an anesthetic cream one hour before the session provides great comfort to patients. For more sensitive patients, a cold compress during the procedure and/or a strong anesthetic cream can be used, offering additional comfort.
Can Laser Hair Removal be done on dark skin?
Yes. The LightSheer Laser is approved for treating all skin types, including tanned skin. While lighter skin generally provides better results, it’s worth noting that patients with dark skin often face more issues with folliculitis, so they benefit greatly from the treatment.
What is the ideal hair phase for Laser Hair Removal?
It’s important to mention that some hair is not visible to the equipment because it is in the proliferation phase. Therefore, the patient needs several sessions until the doctor applies the Laser during the hair’s anagen phase, which is when the hair is in contact with the root. In the correct phase, the hair is permanently cauterized by the Laser.
A consultation with the specialist is essential for guidance on this matter. Hair reduction happens progressively, with an average reduction of 15% to 20% per session.
Is skin preparation needed?
We also recommend using bleaching creams (usually hydroquinone-based) throughout the treatment (an internationally recognized protocol that is important for the best results). Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should avoid using the bleaching cream. Intense sun exposure should be avoided, and tanning products should not be used. During the treatment, hair should not be removed with tweezers or wax; the ideal methods are shaving, trimming, or using depilatory cream.
