For this reason, dark circle treatment is considered one of the most challenging areas in aesthetic dermatology. In many cases, it is necessary to combine different techniques to achieve more effective and long-lasting results.
In this article, you will understand the main types of dark circles, which treatments are commonly recommended by dermatologists, and how each procedure works on the skin. Continue reading to discover how to improve the appearance of this very sensitive area of the face.
Why can dark circle treatment be complex?
Dark circles can appear for different reasons, which makes treatment more challenging. In some people, the problem is related to excess pigmentation in the skin. In others, the darkened appearance is caused by the depth of the area under the eyes, which creates natural shadows on the face.
In addition, factors such as genetics, aging, and sun exposure can also directly influence the appearance or intensification of dark circles. It is not uncommon for a patient to have more than one type of dark circle at the same time, which requires a personalized approach.
Among the most common causes are:
- accumulation of pigments in the skin
- loss of volume under the eyes
For this reason, treatment is usually gradual and adapted to the individual characteristics of each patient.
Types of dark circles
Correctly identifying the type of dark circle is the first step in determining the most appropriate treatment. In general, they can be classified into two main groups.
Pigmented dark circles
Pigmented dark circles are characterized by darkening of the skin in the area below the eyes. The color may vary between purplish, brownish, or even reddish tones.
This type of dark circle is usually related to increased production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Excessive sun exposure and genetic factors can contribute to the worsening of this condition.
Deep dark circles
Deep dark circles are related to loss of volume in the area below the eyes. Over time, there is a natural reduction of fat and structural support in this area of the face, forming a hollow that creates shadows and gives the impression of darkening.
This type of dark circle is quite common with aging and can make the eyes appear more tired.
Intense pulsed light for pigmented dark circles
One of the most commonly used treatments to improve pigmented dark circles is intense pulsed light (IPL). This procedure uses high-intensity light beams that penetrate the skin and act directly on the pigments responsible for darkening the area.
When the light comes into contact with dark pigments, especially those formed by melanin, a gradual breakdown of these particles occurs. Over time, the body eliminates this excess pigmentation, and the skin tends to become lighter.
The procedure is usually simple and well tolerated. During the session, the patient may feel only a mild sensation of heat on the skin. To increase comfort, a topical anesthetic is often applied about one hour before the treatment.
In general, the protocol includes approximately five sessions, with intervals of about one month between them. Results begin to appear gradually, usually after the first applications.
To ensure safety and better results, some precautions are important:
- avoid excessive sun exposure
- use sunscreen daily
These measures help protect the skin and enhance the effects of the treatment.
Hyaluronic acid fillers for deep dark circles

When dark circles are related to the depth of the under-eye area, the most recommended treatment is usually hyaluronic acid fillers.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body. It is found in the skin, joints, and several tissues, acting mainly in hydration and maintaining skin volume.
During the procedure, the dermatologist uses a filler specifically designed for the under-eye area, which has a more delicate and refined texture. This allows the product to settle naturally in the treated area.
The procedure is usually performed using a cannula, a thin instrument similar to a small tube. The doctor makes a small entry point and carefully deposits the product beneath the skin.
This process is generally quick, minimally painful, and very well tolerated by patients. An important aspect is avoiding excessive filling, as too much product can compromise the aesthetic result.
How long do dark circle treatment results last?
One positive aspect of hyaluronic acid fillers is that the result can be seen immediately after the procedure. Many patients report instant improvement in the appearance of the under-eye area.
However, because hyaluronic acid is gradually absorbed by the body, the effect of the treatment is temporary. On average, the results last between one year and one and a half years, and in some cases they can last up to two years.
After this period, it is recommended to return to the clinic for a new evaluation. It is not always necessary to reapply the product immediately, but in some cases a small touch-up may be recommended.
Other treatments that can complement dark circle treatment
Depending on the diagnosis, the dermatologist may recommend other procedures to complement the treatment. Among them are chemical peels, which help lighten the area by stimulating skin cell renewal.
Another widely used option is the CO₂ laser, considered one of the most effective treatments for facial rejuvenation. It can help improve pigmentation and skin laxity around the eyes.
However, when there is loss of volume in the region, laser treatments do not replace hyaluronic acid fillers, which remain the most recommended procedure in these cases.
What to expect from dark circle treatment
Dark circle treatment usually provides a significant improvement in the appearance of the area, making the eyes look more rested and rejuvenated. However, it is important to understand that each patient responds differently to treatments.
Some people experience faster results, while others may need more sessions or a combination of different treatments.
For this reason, follow-up with a dermatologist is essential to define the most appropriate strategy and ensure safe and natural results.
