Does Hyperhidrosis Have a Treatment? How Does It Work? Understand!

Hyperhidrosis

Hello, I’m Dr. Guilherme Szerman, and today we’re going to address a common question from those who suffer from excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis. So, is there a treatment for hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis usually occurs in the armpits, groin, palms, and feet. In the past, the only option was surgery called sympathectomy. Nowadays, we have botulinum toxin injections, a globally performed and very safe procedure, which, when done by a specialized professional, provides very satisfactory results.

How does hyperhidrosis treatment work?

Botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signal that goes from the nerve to the sweat glands, which causes excessive sweating. It does not alter or damage the glands or the sweat. The effect is temporary, lasting six to eight months, providing significant relief during this period.

What causes hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis can be caused by different factors depending on the type:

🔹 Primary hyperhidrosis: This is the most common type and has no defined cause. It is believed to be related to genetic factors and a dysfunction in the sympathetic nervous system, which controls sweat production. It usually affects specific areas such as the hands, feet, armpits, and face, and typically begins in childhood or adolescence.

🔹 Secondary hyperhidrosis: This is caused by health conditions or medication use. It can be related to diseases such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, obesity, menopause, infections, or even anxiety. In this case, sweating affects the entire body and may appear suddenly.

If you notice excessive sweating beyond the normal, it’s best to consult a dermatologist to investigate the cause and start appropriate treatment.

Do genetic factors cause focal?

It’s important to note that nowadays, the tendency is to believe in a genetic alteration that leads to hyperhidrosis. Many people wonder if excessive sweating is related to stress or anxiety.

Certainly, anxiety or stressful situations can worsen excessive sweating. But there is indeed a genetic tendency, especially since hyperhidrosis can affect young children and multiple family members.

Patients often feel insecure, thinking they sweat excessively because they are nervous or insecure, when actually it’s not the case. It is a genetic condition that today we can control with botulinum toxin treatment, which unlike the old option, does not involve surgery.

What is the difference between hyperhidrosis and sweating?

Do you know the difference between hyperhidrosis and sweating? Sweating is the body’s natural process, essential for regulating temperature and eliminating toxins. Hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is a medical condition characterized by excessive sweating even at rest or in cold environments, mainly affecting the hands, armpits, feet, and face.

This abnormal sweating can cause embarrassment and impact quality of life. The good news is that effective treatments exist to control the problem. If you sweat more than normal, it’s worth consulting a dermatologist to understand the best solution for your case.

Is botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis permanent?

Although botulinum toxin is an effective treatment for hyperhidrosis, its effects are temporary and require periodic reapplications. For those seeking a permanent solution, surgery is the most lasting alternative. However, this procedure involves greater risks and should be carefully evaluated with a specialized professional.

Surgery to treat hyperhidrosis is usually done via a clavicular approach. Meanwhile, botulinum toxin application is a simple, easy procedure. At our clinic, we perform botulinum toxin treatments with very satisfactory and safe results, including for hyperhidrosis.

It’s not permanent like surgery, but effects last from 6 to 8 months. Patients can safely repeat the procedure to maintain results. Most patients leave the office very satisfied.

Dica do Dr. Szerman

Dr. Szerman
