Difference Between Photoepilation and Laser Hair Removal [Find Out Now]

Photoepilation and Laser Hair Removal

I am Dr. Ronald Szerman, and today I want to talk a little more about permanent hair removal. After all, is there a difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal?

In articles previously published on our platform, we have already addressed the most common questions people ask about laser hair removal. In this article, however, I want to discuss the questions patients often ask in the clinic regarding photoepilation and laser hair removal.

Is there a difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal?

Many patients are curious about the difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal. The answer is yes, there is a difference.

Laser hair removal uses a concentrated beam of light. The device emits a precise laser, whereas pulsed light works differently, as its name suggests. Photoepilation involves pulsed light flashes that are absorbed by the hair’s melanin, heating and destroying the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal is more targeted, focusing directly on the follicle. This makes it faster and more efficient than photoepilation.

How long does the effect of photoepilation last?

The results of photoepilation can last from months to years, depending on skin type, hair thickness, treated area, and the number of sessions.

Generally, after a complete treatment—usually 6 to 10 sessions—many patients experience permanent hair reduction, needing only occasional maintenance sessions. However, hormonal and genetic factors may influence hair regrowth over time.

Thus, while photoepilation offers long-lasting results, it is not considered permanent hair removal. Professional follow-up is essential to maintain effects.

How long after photoepilation do hairs fall out?

After a session, hair does not fall out immediately. Usually, it begins to shed 7 to 15 days after the procedure. This happens because pulsed light targets the hair root, damaging the follicle, so the hair is naturally expelled over time.

During this period, hair may appear to be growing, but it is actually being pushed out of the skin. It is important not to pluck or wax hairs during this time, as this can affect the results. Gentle exfoliation, as advised by a professional, is recommended. Since photoepilation only affects hairs in the growth phase, multiple sessions are necessary for effective and lasting reduction. Proper follow-up ensures better results and safety.

Laser equipment for hair removal

In addition to understanding the difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal, it’s important to note that some laser devices are safer for patients compared to pulsed light. Many patients come to our clinic after using pulsed light with good results and wish to switch to laser treatment.

On the other hand, some patients have undergone laser treatments and did not achieve satisfactory results or experienced complications. Why?

Because results depend not only on the difference between photoepilation and laser hair removal, but also on the brand and type of laser used. In our clinic, we use a diode laser called LightSheer.

What makes a better laser device?

First, it must be more efficient, with stronger attraction to melanin. The LightSheer device has a cooled tip, which is crucial—it cools the skin to 4°C while treating. This makes it more effective and safer, even for patients with darker skin tones, which is the case with the device we use.

In addition to the difference between photoepilation and laser, and the quality of the equipment, the experience and training of the professional are critical.

A medical professional is always the most qualified to perform any laser treatment, not just hair removal. Another important factor is the patient’s own characteristics—skin type, hair type, hormonal factors, and genetics can all influence results.
