What is Skin Rejuvenation?

Aging is generally characterized by the reduced ability of our body to respond to biological stress and properly repair cellular errors.

Facial rejuvenation treatments help restore the skin, making it look younger and more beautiful by removing the more damaged outer layers to reveal healthier-looking skin underneath and stimulate cellular renewal.

Over time, the outer layers of our skin begin to show signs of wear due to aging, injuries, and environmental factors, such as wrinkles, scars, age spots, and discoloration.

Best Treatments for Rejuvenation

Skin rejuvenation treatments aim to reverse the signs of aging, helping you look younger and healthier.

Dermatologists use a variety of procedures to rejuvenate the skin and address numerous dermatological concerns. Check the list below to explore your options:

Who Should Undergo Facial Rejuvenation Treatments?

There are literally hundreds of different skin rejuvenation treatments available, each marketed under its own brand.

While most of these techniques are highly effective, it’s important to remember that the most significant factor influencing your results is the professional performing the procedure. This applies to both non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments and cosmetic plastic surgery.

Certain skin rejuvenation treatments should only be performed by physicians certified by the Federal Council of Medicine. These include deep chemical peels and some ablative laser treatments.

Other treatments, such as microneedling, light peels, and microdermabrasion, can be performed safely and effectively by other highly trained and certified healthcare professionals.

The credentials required to perform skin rejuvenation treatments vary by country. However, regardless of local regulations, you should always choose a licensed provider who works under the supervision of a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon and has extensive experience in medical skincare.

When consulting potential professionals, ask how many times they have performed the specific treatments you are considering. Also, inquire about their experience working with patients with your skin type and concerns. This is essential for your safety and to ensure the treatments you receive effectively achieve your goals.

The best place to start is by contacting a board-certified dermatologist and scheduling a consultation.

Non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments include injectable fillers, which restore lost volume in specific areas of the face naturally and harmoniously.

This is achieved through hyaluronic acid fillers, neurotoxins like botulinum toxin, focused ultrasound, and collagen biostimulators to tighten the skin and restore facial contours.

Many dermatologists combine these treatments to provide tissue support, improve skin hydration and elasticity, address wrinkles and fine lines, and achieve optimal, long-lasting results. The guide below details all your options.

Laser Rejuvenation

Lasers use highly concentrated beams of light energy to improve skin tone, texture, and appearance.

How Can Laser Skin Rejuvenation Improve My Skin?

  • Minimizes fine lines and wrinkles
  • Treats brown spots, redness, or discoloration for a more even skin tone
  • Restores skin firmness and stimulates collagen production
  • Removes acne or surgical scars
  • Eliminates unwanted facial or body hair

Ablative Lasers

Ablative lasers remove the outer layers of the skin and stimulate new skin to regenerate in its place. The Fractional CO2 Laser and Erbium (Pixel) Laser are the most well-known.

The laser’s penetration depth depends on the light’s wavelength; your dermatologist will determine the best laser application for you based on your skin type, goals, and concerns.

Today, more dermatologists use fractional lasers, which treat only a fraction of the skin in the targeted area. This allows the laser to safely penetrate deeper layers of the skin, delivering more substantial results with minimal downtime.

Non-Ablative Lasers

Some lasers do not damage the skin’s surface; these are called non-ablative lasers. The Etherea Laser is one example.

Instead, they work by heating the skin below the surface to stimulate new collagen growth, helping restore firmness and a natural tone.

While non-ablative lasers work more gradually than ablative ones, these treatments typically require no downtime and can offer long-lasting results for rejuvenating your appearance.

The improvements from laser rejuvenation can be long-lasting and appealing, but they won’t appear immediately and may not be as dramatic as those from a fractional laser. It takes several months for the full effects of new skin cell and collagen growth to become visible, and residual effects, like pinkness in the treated area, may take a few weeks to subside.

However, each patient is unique. Your dermatologist will help you understand what results you can expect from different rejuvenation treatment options.

Peels

Another way to rejuvenate the skin is by applying a chemical solution that causes the outer layers of the skin to peel off, a procedure known as a chemical peel.

Chemical peels are typically performed in a dermatologist’s office by a dermatologist, esthetician, or another specially trained healthcare professional. During the procedure, a solution is brushed or applied to the skin and left for a set period.

In the days following treatment, the affected skin layers gradually peel away, revealing smoother, younger-looking skin.

These peels promote superficial skin rejuvenation. They are highly safe treatments that can be performed regularly, addressing a range of concerns, such as: Cellular renewal, Acne, Blemishes, Fine wrinkles, Open pores, minimizing or eliminating acne scars, light injury scars, or surgical scars…

Firming, toning, and brightening the skin there are several types of peels, including physical peels (e.g., crystal peel) and chemical peels, tailored to specific skin concerns: Retinoic and Salicylic Peels: Ideal for acne, oily skin, and stretch marks modern peels (e.g., Melanesse, Cosmelan, Cimel): Focused on treating pigmentation and skin rejuvenation.

Light vs. Deep Chemical Peels

Depending on the treatment, a peel is generally classified as light, medium, or deep. This refers to how many layers of skin are removed.

Light Chemical Peels typically target the epidermis (the outermost layers of the skin) and use gentler acidic solutions such as glycolic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), salicylic acid, fruit enzymes, or low concentrations of trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Can be safely applied by a trained and experienced esthetician under the supervision of a dermatologist. Usually involve little to no downtime, making them a convenient option.

Deep Chemical Peels penetrate deeper into the epidermis or even the dermis (the next layer of skin). Recommended for addressing more advanced signs of aging, such as deep wrinkles, extensive sun damage, or severe acne scars.

Examples include phenol peels, stronger TCA peels, and croton oil peels. While they offer more dramatic results, these peels are more complex procedures.

Anesthesia may be required to ensure patient comfort, and several days of downtime are necessary for optimal healing.

Choosing the Right Peel your dermatologist will recommend a chemical peel based on your skin type, the specific issues you want to address, and the depth needed to achieve your desired results.

Results and Maintenance after the initial healing period, some improvements will be immediately noticeable, such as brighter, firmer skin and a more even tone. However, the effects of chemical peels are cumulative, and many patients find it necessary to repeat treatments periodically to achieve and maintain the best results.

Collagen Biostimulators

Sculptra

Sculptra is a collagen biostimulator composed of poly-L-lactic acid, widely regarded as one of the most effective treatments for skin laxity and rejuvenation.

It also plays a significant role in treating and preventing wrinkles, cellulite, and offers a lifting effect.
Its action boosts collagen production by up to 400%, significantly improving skin texture and firmness.

The procedure is minimally invasive, performed with a cannula, and is primarily used on the face, neck, buttocks, arms, and thighs.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a collagen biostimulator based on calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres with a powerful rejuvenating effect.

It is a quick and safe procedure frequently used for volume correction and facial contouring. It can also be applied to the hands, neck, buttocks, and other areas.

This biostimulator enhances skin elasticity and radiance, improves volume in the treated area, and delivers rejuvenated and higher-quality skin.

Focused Ultrasound

By generating heat at micro-points in the skin, thermal waves act deeply, creating coagulation zones and stimulating collagen production.

Devices: Ulthera and Ultraformer

Since it penetrates deeper and provides muscular anchoring, it offers greater support and firmness to the skin. It is an excellent option for patients with heavier faces or body laxity.

Radiofrequency

According to the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), radiofrequency is a technique that heats all tissues containing water molecules. It works by generating heat in the dermis (the skin’s middle layer), inducing the production of new collagen fibers.

Between 5 to 10 sessions are needed, primarily recommended for treating sagging skin, cellulite, and localized fat.

Microneedling

The SBD describes microneedling as a skin rejuvenation technique that leverages the body’s natural healing process to reduce imperfections, repair sun damage, and restore smoother and clearer skin.

Unlike treatments that remove skin layers with heat or chemicals, microneedling involves micro-perforations in the skin using fine metallic needles.

Although these “injuries” are invisible to the naked eye, they trigger the body’s natural healing response, stimulating collagen production, new skin fibers, and thickening of the epidermis.

The technique can be performed using rollers, electric pens, or stamps. It is crucial to ensure that the equipment used is approved by Anvisa, the needles are sterile, and never reused, even on the same patient.

What skin problems can microneedling treat?

• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Acne or surgical scars
• Enlarged pores
• Sun damage, age spots, and hyperpigmentation
• Stretch marks
• Rough patches and texture issues

Since microneedling does not remove skin layers with chemicals or lasers, it is generally safe for all skin types, including darker skin tones.

Additionally, microneedling requires little to no downtime for most patients and does not involve a post-treatment “peeling” period.

However, the results may not be as dramatic as those achieved with more aggressive treatments, and multiple microneedling sessions are often necessary to address specific skin concerns in a given area.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, is a treatment similar to laser rejuvenation as it uses light to address skin concerns, particularly pigmentation issues, and rejuvenate the complexion.

However, instead of a single, highly focused wavelength, IPL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths delivered in brief pulses.

This light benefits the skin in two ways. First, IPL wavelengths target and absorb excess pigment in the skin (reds and browns), helping to restore a more even complexion.

To a lesser extent, IPL also stimulates collagen production, enhancing the overall tone and texture of the skin.

IPL is a non-ablative treatment (no skin is removed during the procedure) and typically involves little to no downtime.

What Skin Issues Can IPL Treat?

• Sun damage
• Hyperpigmentation
• Age spots and freckles
• Spider veins
• Redness and rosacea
• Vascular lesions
• Texture issues
• Fine lines

IPL is marketed under various names, including BBL™ (BroadBand Light), Photofacial, and Photorejuvenation.

While individual treatment platforms may vary slightly in their specifications, all utilize broad-spectrum intense pulsed light technology. The expertise of your provider plays a more significant role in your treatment outcomes than the brand of the device used.

PDO Threads

PDO threads are designed based on the well-known suture threads, but with the purpose of stimulating collagen production and providing skin support. They are composed of polydioxanone (PDO) and are fully absorbed by the body.

The threads are placed in various directions under the skin, providing support, and from there, they begin to stimulate collagen production.

What is the best method for facial rejuvenation?

This is one of the common questions about facial rejuvenation for which there is no predefined answer. The treatments I mentioned, especially laser, fillers, and Botox, are the most commonly recommended. Combining treatments is also quite interesting for achieving the best results.

The choice of treatments will be based on an evaluation of each patient’s face. We must remember that people are not the same, and thus each patient will receive an individualized treatment plan.
